HUANG YAN

Huang Yan est né à Jilin en 1966. Il est diplômé de l'Académie normale de Changchun en 1987. Poète inspiré par la tradition classique de la calligraphie et du paysage, Huang Yan, aidé par sa femme Zhang Tiemei, recouvre différents supports - chair et os de boeuf tout d'abord, puis son propre corps - de paysages montagneux bleu-verts. Cet art, qui revisite la tradition, est avant tout conceptuel et résolument contemporain, il rejoint une préoccupation chinoise pour le corps humain considéré comme un tabou par le pouvoir communiste. 

Biographie

Il est diplômé de l’Académie normale de Changchun en 1987. Poète inspiré par la tradition classique de la calligraphie et du paysage, Huang Yan, aidé par sa femme Zhang Tiemei, recouvre différents supports – chair et os de boeuf tout d’abord, puis son propre corps – de paysages montagneux bleu-verts. Cet art, qui revisite la tradition, est avant tout conceptuel et résolument contemporain, il rejoint une préoccupation chinoise pour le corps humain considéré comme un tabou par le pouvoir communiste. Les paysages sont devenus la quintessence de l’art chinois depuis les premières peintures de la dynastie Han, tandis que le corps, est le vecteur majeur du développement de l’art contemporain en Chine depuis la fin des années 1970, à vocation contestataire.

Ainsi, sa plus célèbre série « Chinese Landscapes » réalisée en 1999 le représente tatoué de paysages traditionnels chinois, une performance remarquée entre autres par Feng Boyi et Ai Weiwei, qui ont sélectionné plusieurs tirages pour Fuck Off à Shanghai en 2000. Même s’il n’a jamais été un artiste de la scène, Huang Yan affirme une telle approche artistique contemporaine, que l’on ne peut s’empêcher de faire le lien avec l’art de la performance.

Huang Yan a également écrit plusieurs livres sur l’émergence des nouveaux artistes contemporains chinois, et est le propriétaire de sa propre galerie, Must Be Contemporary Art à Pékin où il vit aujourd’hui.

« Le paysage est une forme d’expression de moi-même… C’est une position de tranquillité et un endroit pour stocker mon corps. C’est ma résistance contre ce monde de conflits et un moyen de libérer mes idées. »
