Biography
Son of a calligrapher, Chen Weinong, born in 1962 in the province of Zhejiang, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1988.
He freely interprets the rules of calligraphy; his art blends abstract art techniques with traditional Chinese calligraphy. He knew how to keep from a fairly classic education a very learned use, very mastered of the brush while giving free rein to a great creative passion.
Chen Weinong works in black and white. Despite the traditional duotone of his inks, there emerges a power and a very spring-like sensitivity that reserve surprising contrasts between fullness and emptiness, presence and absence, darkness and light. Although his inspiration comes from his observation of nature, Chen Weinong does not advocate realism: “By handling the brush, the artist is free to create for each painting a world in itself with its own elements”. The power that emanates from his work earned him the recognition of the artist Zao Wou-Ki during his stay in Paris.
He currently lives and works between Paris and Haining (China).
” Chen Weinong is part of this group of exceptional painters, which keeps alive three thousand years of Chinese painting. I mean by life, this ever-renewed youth of the plant which blooms again from the primordial seed. Chen Weinong uses the three treasures that have created the richness of Chinese painting since the first dynasties: paper, brush, ink.
Chen Weinong’s calligraphy is alert, nervous, vigorous. Sometimes fat, sometimes slender, it traces vertical staves of leaping ideograms. Its secret song expresses strength.
I go through his ink works with skilful dilutions that create all the illusions. Calligraphy discreetly insinuates itself, which does not want to be forgotten. She is tenderly attached to the brush that gave her life.
Our friend’s creations, his lyrical abstractions that unfold in waves and streaks on the paper do not describe landscapes. On the other hand, in a mysterious correspondence, they revive those intimate sensations that arise when contemplating the sky, the mountains, the sea. “
